Homestay CHẤT – Pagoda View 1 Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Homestay CHẤT? The name actually means “quality” in Vietnamese, and honestly, they’re not kidding around. I’ve walked past this narrow building on Hàng Than street probably a dozen times before finally booking a room, and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. The entrance is easy to miss if you’re not looking – it’s tucked between a bánh mì stall and one of those tiny motorbike repair shops that seem to exist on every corner in Ba Dinh.
The pagoda view they’re talking about is legit spectacular, especially from the upper floors. I mean, you’re looking straight out at Quan Su Pagoda’s rooftop, and in the early morning when the incense smoke is drifting up and mixing with Hanoi’s perpetual haze, it’s actually pretty magical. The rooms themselves have this interesting mix of traditional Vietnamese touches and modern comfort – nothing too fancy, but everything works properly (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given in Old Quarter homestays). The air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing, the WiFi actually reaches every corner of the room, and the shower has proper water pressure. Small victories, but they matter when you’re dealing with Hanoi’s humidity.
What really sets this place apart is the family running it – they’ve got that perfect balance of being incredibly helpful without hovering. The owner’s daughter speaks excellent English and gave me better restaurant recommendations than any guidebook I’ve read. She steered me away from the tourist traps on Hàng Bồ and pointed me toward this incredible bún chả place about three blocks away where I never saw another foreigner. Location-wise, you’re about a fifteen-minute walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, but here’s the thing – you’re far enough from the main backpacker chaos that you can actually sleep at night. The street does get busy during morning rush hour (around 7-8 AM), but it’s more of a gentle hum than the motorbike symphony you get closer to the lake. There’s a Circle K literally next door, which became my lifeline for late-night snacks and overpriced imported coffee. The nearby wet market opens around 5 AM if you’re into that authentic local experience, though fair warning – it gets pretty aromatic by midday. I stayed here during both rainy season and the cooler months, and the rooms stay comfortable year-round. The building’s narrow staircase means you’ll get a bit of a workout if you’re on the top floor, but that’s pretty standard for this part of Hanoi. For the price point and that 9-star rating, it’s genuinely deserved – this isn’t some inflated review situation.
