Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Hong Gia Tue Apartment when I first booked it – the name doesn’t exactly scream luxury, you know? But walking up to this place on Nguyễn Trường Tộ, I immediately got why it has that killer 9.5 rating. The building sits right in the heart of Trúc Bạch, which is actually one of those neighborhoods that feels authentically Hanoi without being touristy chaos. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the lake where locals do their morning tai chi, and I mean the real deal – not the tourist version you see around Hoàn Kiếm.

What really got me was how the staff just… gets it. They’re not following some scripted hospitality playbook. When I mentioned I was hunting for good bún chả, the front desk guy (I think his name was Minh?) actually drew me a little map to this tiny place two blocks over that doesn’t even have a sign. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t fake. The apartments themselves are surprisingly spacious – and I say surprising because Hanoi real estate is usually tiny. The kitchenette actually works, which is more than I can say for most places I’ve stayed in the city. There’s this nice balance between modern amenities and not feeling sterile, if that makes sense. The air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine, which honestly is rare around here.

Location-wise, you’re in this sweet spot where you can walk to Ba Đình Square (maybe 15 minutes if you’re not rushing), but you’re not dealing with the motorbike symphony that never stops in the Old Quarter. The street itself is quiet enough that you can actually sleep with the windows cracked – I loved hearing the morning sounds of the neighborhood waking up. There’s a decent coffee shop right downstairs where the barista makes a mean cà phê sữa đá, and the evening food stalls that pop up along the street serve some of the best nem rán I had during my entire trip. Just don’t expect English menus, but honestly, pointing works fine and the food is worth any communication fumbling. The whole area feels like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble, which is exactly what I was hoping for in Hanoi.

  Excellent location! Close enough to Old Quarter but I actually preferred the vibe of the neighborhood and cafes/shops around. Such a comfy bed and the staff was beyond friendly and helpful. Also so comforting to have Netflix to watch at night, a treat since so haven’t watched TV in months of traveling!

  What could be improved: Stairs to the street needs a railing. Staircase should be lit and free of debris as an alternate to using the elevator and in case of an emergency. Smell of cigarette smoke coming fro the ventilation system on occasion.

  I had to stay in Vietnam longer than expected due to getting sick and luckily I found this apartment with a one hour notice. The staff was very nice even though most of them did not speak english. The area was also more quiet than the old quarter.
