Matilda Boutique Hotel & Spa Overview

First Impressions

Walking down Ma May Street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, you might almost miss the Matilda Boutique Hotel & Spa if you’re not paying attention — but honestly, that’s part of its charm. This three-star boutique property sits quietly among the bustling street food vendors and motorbike traffic, offering a surprisingly peaceful retreat once you step inside. The narrow facade is typical of Old Quarter buildings, but don’t let that fool you — there’s more space and comfort here than you’d expect from the street view.

Location & Neighborhood

You know what’s brilliant about staying right in Hanoi’s heart? Everything you want to see is literally within walking distance. I mean, you’re steps away from Hoan Kiem Lake, and the weekend night market practically happens on your doorstep. The location score of 9.5 makes total sense when you realize you can grab a bowl of pho for breakfast, explore the Temple of Literature in the morning, and still make it back for an afternoon spa session without breaking a sweat. Couples seem to get this — they’ve rated the location 9.4, probably because there’s something undeniably romantic about wandering these ancient streets together.

The Room Experience

The room here strike that sweet spot between modern comfort and local character. Each room feels thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter corporate, with Vietnamese touches that actually feel authentic instead of touristy. The beds are genuinely comfortable (trust me, after a day of walking Hanoi’s uneven sidewalks, this matters), and the air conditioning works reliably — which is crucial during those humid summer months. What I particularly appreciated was the attention to soundproofing; despite being on a busy Old Quarter street, you can actually get a decent night’s sleep.

Spa & Dining

The spa component isn’t just a fancy add-on to the name — they actually know what they’re doing here. After spending days navigating Hanoi’s chaotic traffic and crowded markets, a proper massage feels less like indulgence and more like necessity. The breakfast situation is honestly impressive for a three-star place — they’ve got everything from continental basics to full English options, plus proper Vietnamese dishes if you want to start your day authentically. The variety means you won’t get bored even if you’re staying for a week, which might explain why they have more repeat guests than most other properties in the area.

Why Guests Love It

There’s something to be said for a place that gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to impress. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience rather than just going through the motions, and the fact that people keep coming back speaks volumes. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Hanoi — it’s just focused on being a really solid base for exploring one of Southeast Asia’s most fascinating cities. For the price point and location, you’re getting exceptional value, especially when you factor in that spa access and the quality breakfast spread.

Hotels near me in Hanoi deliver quick rides to train street cafes, designer boutiques in the French Quarter, and Red River cruises.
