Oakwood Residence Hanoi Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Hanoi, but Oakwood Residence really caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way. You know how sometimes you book a place based on photos and reviews, then cross your fingers? Well, this one actually delivers. It’s tucked away on this narrow lane off Dang Thai Mai Street in Tay Ho, which honestly took my Grab driver about ten minutes of circling to find the first time, but that’s sort of the charm of it. You’re in this quiet residential pocket where actual Hanoians live, not tourist central.

The thing about Tay Ho is that it’s got this expat vibe without being completely disconnected from local life – I’d walk out in the morning and there’s this little coffee lady who sets up her plastic stools right at the corner of the lane, makes incredible ca phe sua da for like 15,000 dong. The hotel itself feels more like a sophisticated apartment building than your typical tourist trap. When you walk into the lobby, there’s this subtle wood and stone thing going on that doesn’t scream “LUXURY HOTEL” at you, which I actually appreciated. The staff behind the front desk genuinely seemed to know the neighborhood – they pointed me toward this amazing bun cha place about a five-minute walk away that I never would’ve found otherwise.

What really sold me was the rooms though. I mean, you get proper space here, not those shoebox hotel rooms where you’re bumping into furniture every time you turn around. The kitchenette actually works (I tested it with some street food reheating), and honestly, after two weeks of hotel breakfast buffets, being able to make my own coffee in the morning felt like a small miracle. The bed situation is solid – none of that rock-hard mattress nonsense you sometimes get in Asian hotels. Only minor complaint? The air conditioning unit makes this weird clicking sound around 3 AM, but it’s not a dealbreaker. You’re close enough to West Lake that you can walk over there in the evening when it gets cooler, watch the locals doing their tai chi at sunset. There’s also this whole strip of decent restaurants and bars along the lake if you don’t feel like venturing into the Old Quarter chaos. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you factor in that you’re getting apartment-style space, a location that feels authentically Hanoi but isn’t overwhelming, and staff who actually seem to care about whether you find what you’re looking for. It’s not the cheapest option in the city, but for what you get – especially if you’re staying more than a couple nights – it’s worth the extra spend.

  • Joel from United Kingdom – 7 May 2025 (9/10)

The facilities were unreal, we had access to the pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and gym. The rooms were so comfortable and clean. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Hanoi.

What could be improved: It was about a 10-15 minute taxi from the old quarter, but to be honest it was nice as the area was quiet and quaint.

  • Andrea from United Kingdom – 4 May 2025 (9/10)

  • Jose from Vietnam – 2 May 2025 (9/10)

I liked everything! the building is welcoming and well decorated and well maintained. The staff is great, friendly, helpful, and speak English well. The view from the room to the lake is amazing and everything thing works. Several TV channels to choose from, beds are comfortable, and several nice amenities are available. The room also had a fridge, and a full equipped kitchenette in case we needed to cook meals for us or our children. The indoor pool is the star with a great view to the West Lake and with the perfect temperature. The breakfast is also great, a lot to choose from and quality ingredients. The outdoor space outside the hotel is very nice with a lake and a nice playground for the kids. Finally, the location is great, near many nice restaurants and near a small nice Vietnamese neighborhood where we can watch the locals do exercise and spend time with their kids. Really nice vibes. From now on, this will be my choice to stay everytime I need to stay a few nights in Hanoi.

The option of making a takeaway coffee to go on the way to work. The greenery of the grounds surrounding the entry and the bar make it a tranquil oasis to come back to and have a relaxing drink before heading up to bed.
