OldHouseinOldStreet/1BR/1sofabed Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw the name “OldHouseinOldStreet,” I thought it was some quirky Airbnb listing that someone threw together without much thought. But actually walking up to this place on Hàng Chiếu Street? It totally makes sense. You’re literally staying in an old house on one of Hanoi’s genuinely old streets, and there’s something refreshingly straightforward about that.

The location is what really got me though. Hàng Chiếu runs right through the heart of the Old Quarter, and I mean the real deal – not the touristy edges where you get overpriced phở. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, but more importantly, you’re surrounded by the kind of narrow alleys where locals actually live and work. There’s this little coffee shop two doors down where the owner doesn’t speak English but makes incredible cà phê sữa đá, and honestly, that’s worth more than any hotel concierge service. The street gets busy during the day with motorbikes (obviously – it’s Hanoi), but it actually quiets down at night, which surprised me.

Inside, the one-bedroom setup works better than you’d expect. The sofa bed isn’t just decorative – I mean, it’s actually comfortable enough that you wouldn’t mind having friends crash there. The whole space feels like someone’s actual apartment rather than a sterile hotel room, which I know sounds cliché, but you know what I mean when you’re tired of beige walls and generic art. The kitchen area is small but functional, and there’s something satisfying about being able to grab fresh ingredients from the morning market on Hàng Da (about a ten-minute walk) and actually cook something. The air conditioning works well, which matters more than you think during Hanoi’s sticky summers. Check-in was surprisingly smooth – the host met me right at the building and walked me through everything, including how to navigate the slightly confusing entrance (it’s one of those places where you have to know which door to use).

What I appreciated most was how the place sits right in the middle of everything without feeling like a tourist trap. You’re close enough to walk to the Temple of Literature or the night market, but you’re also in a neighborhood where people hang laundry from their balconies and kids play in the alleys. The building itself has character – creaky wooden floors, high ceilings, the kind of details you can’t fake in newer constructions. Fair warning though, if you’re someone who needs perfect soundproofing, the old walls do let some street noise through, but honestly, the gentle hum of the neighborhood is part of the charm. For the price point and that 8.5 rating, it makes sense – this isn’t luxury, but it’s authentic and comfortable, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to actually experience a city rather than just visit it.

Reviews of OldHouseinOldStreet/1BR/1sofabed

  • Sze from Singapore – 20 January 2025 (7/10)

Location was superb, right in the strip where the shops, restaurants and local market is.
Host was helpful in giving recommendations etc
Apartment had most things that we needed, if only they were cleaned before we arrived.

What could be improved: Property was extremely dirty – there was a thick layer of dust throughout the house, on the floors, the counter tops and the furniture.
Place looked like it had not been cleaned for ages, so it was not at all comfortable. It was just not possible to use the balcony – it was filthy!
We had to wipe off all the dirt before we could place ourselves or my belongings on them
There was a washing machine but it was completely spoilt.
But host was kind enough to do our laundry every other day. That was a great help as we were playing pickleball everyday and we needed our clothes washed.

  • Emmi from Finland – 12 December 2023 (9/10)

Apartment is spacious and tidy. The location is perfect, and the host is absolutely lovely. We were taken really good care of, and I can only recommend staying here.
