Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Overview
Walking up to the Sofitel Legend Metropole, you’ll immediately get why this place has been Hanoi’s grand dame hotel since 1901 – it’s got that colonial elegance thing down pat, but honestly, it doesn’t feel stuffy or museum-like at all. The white facade practically glows against the chaos of Ngo Quyen Street, and I mean chaos in the best possible way. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, which locals call “Sword Lake” (and you’ll hear that name way more than the official one). The Opera House is right there too, so you can stumble out after a show and be in bed in five minutes flat.
What really gets me about the Metropole is how they’ve managed to keep the French colonial charm without making it feel like you’re sleeping in a history textbook. The rooms – well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a proper five-star, but with touches that actually matter. The bathroom marble isn’t just for show, it stays cool even when Hanoi’s humidity is trying to melt you in August. And you know what? The air conditioning is powerful enough to make you forget you’re in Southeast Asia, which honestly saved my life during my summer visit. The staff remembers your name after one interaction, which sounds like a small thing until you’ve been traveling for weeks and just want someone to treat you like a human being. Check-in was seamless even though I arrived at some ungodly early hour – they had my room ready and offered to store my bags without that fake smile you get at chain hotels.
Here’s the thing though – location aside, what makes this place special is how it sits in the middle of everything without feeling overwhelmed by it. You’re on a busy street, sure, but the windows actually block out the motorbike symphony that is Hanoi traffic. The pool area (which is tucked away in this gorgeous courtyard) becomes this little oasis where you can decompress after navigating the Old Quarter’s narrow streets and aggressive vendors. Speaking of which, the concierge actually knows the city – not just the tourist traps. They pointed me toward this incredible pho place on Hang Ga Street that I never would’ve found otherwise. The hotel’s restaurants are solid too, though honestly, with street food this good right outside your door, you’d be crazy to eat every meal inside. But their breakfast buffet? Yeah, that’s worth staying in for, especially the Vietnamese coffee that’ll wire you for the entire day. At this point, with a 9.4 rating, you’re not taking much of a gamble – it’s one of those places that consistently delivers on the promise of old-world luxury without the pretension.

Reviews of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Jin from Vietnam – 24 May 2025 (9/10)
As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I was overwhelmed by the old -fashioned charm of the over 100 year old hotel. I was glad to be chosen as the guest of the day and received a lovely bouquet of roses and was able to enjoy the complimentary afternoon tea and bar drinks. The room condition was fantastic and very comfortable. Also, highly recommend everyone to try the authentic egg coffee!
What could be improved: One small thing was that some of the lamps in the room kept flickering which was a bit annoying. Some areas in the hotel was old but was all understandable.Elizabeth from Australia – 22 May 2025 (10/10)
Staff were fantastic. Hotel room and bars / restaurants were lux.
What could be improved: NilHeather from Hong Kong – 19 May 2025 (8/10)
Beautiful comfort in the rooms, and the staff were fantastic. Quiet but central location.
What could be improved: The prices for food and beverage – absolutely ridiculous compared to surrounding establishments. We only had drinks/snacks around the pool, and a little room service. The quality was fine ( nothing special) but the prices were exorbitant ( and I live in Hong Kong!)
Also, the pool is much smaller than it appears in the photos and there are far too few sun loungers. People would claim them, then disappear for hours.Jacek from Poland – 11 May 2025 (10/10)
Overall ambience and staff friendly assistance

Rooms were well appointed and the restaurants were amazing
What could be improved: The layout of the facilities took some time to get used toAndrew from United Kingdom – 7 May 2025 (10/10)
Friendly professional staff with amenities of the highest quality. A true oasis amongst the hustle of Hanoi.

The breakfast was really good .
What could be improved: The smoking area in the restaurant.William from Canada – 29 April 2025 (10/10)
Breakfast was very good. All of the staff were excellent.
What could be improved: I had three different dishes. They were not as good as one would expect in a five star hotel and they were very expensive even by European standards.Peter from Australia – 29 April 2025 (10/10)
We were upgraded to a magnificent room on the 7th floor, and I could not find fault with the service we received. Very professional staff. The best breakfast in Vietnam.
What could be improved: It was a little confusing where to be picked up for our transfer as there are two entries and exits. The pool was crowded and difficult to find a seat near it.Amy from Australia – 27 April 2025 (10/10)
Property is stunning and the staff & service was incredible. The perfect hotel in terms of culture, architecture and overall heritage and design. A sanctuary in the middle of Hanoi. We loved the pool and the level of service from the moment you lay down to relax – with water, towels, fruit & snacks given complimentary each time. We used several of the restaurants including the cocktail bar, and we also used the spa (x2 massages) and the gym – all were 10/10.
We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a birthday trip, and the team went above and beyond – providing a complimentary upgrade, birthday cake in the room, birthday card etc….. thank you so much 🙏
Staying here made our whole travel experience in Hanoi unforgettable. We will certainly return next time we visit Hanoi and will recommend this hotel to our family and friends.
Thank you to the Sofitel team & management for an incredible stay & experience.
